Purpose of the catalogue
The AFUDU Public Domain Literature Library exists to make notable public-domain texts more accessible to contemporary readers by providing editorial commentary that illuminates structure, themes, and historical context. The catalogue is curated for people who wish to read with understanding, not merely to browse titles. Each book is accompanied by a catalogue note that draws attention to narrative patterns, recurring images, or editorial choices in the source text, and is written by the catalogue.
Scope and selection
The library currently contains 94 books, all sourced from Project Gutenberg. Selection is based on literary, cultural, or folkloric significance, and on the availability of clear digital editions. No book has been commissioned or created by AFUDU; every work is in the public domain. The collection spans fairy tales, myths, legends, folklore studies, and a few verse or dramatic adaptations. We do not claim to represent every tradition or genre equally, and we acknowledge gaps in coverage.
Source attribution
Every book record includes the original publisher—Project Gutenberg—and, where available, the names of translators, illustrators, and editors. Catalogue notes are original to this site and are prepared for this catalogue. No part of the source text has been altered; editorial material is clearly separated from the public-domain work. We do not claim copyright over any source text.
Bibliographic records
Each entry includes title, author(s) with lifespan dates, publisher, keywords, target reader, and a catalogue note. These fields are derived from the source metadata and supplemented by editorial observation. Keywords are taken directly from the Project Gutenberg record; they are not generated or inflated by us. Target reader is consistently set to “Readers of public-domain and historical texts” for all works, reflecting the intended audience of the library.
Category assignment
Books are grouped into four categories: Fantasy Classics; Folklore; Myths Legends; and Fairy Tales. These are practical navigational aids, not definitive literary classifications. A single work might fit multiple categories; we assign it to the one that best highlights its primary content. Category assignments may be revised as the catalogue grows.
Editorial reading context
Catalogue notes are written using available source material of the book, focusing on observable textual features: narrative structure, recurring motifs, diction, pacing, and the relationship between form and content. We do not pretend to have read every word of every book in full, but notes are based on substantial excerpts and careful analysis. Reading context is provided to orient a first-time reader, not to summarise the entire work.
Edition facts and text measurements
Each note may mention the edition used, the source of any illustrations, and notable features of the transcription (e.g., translator’s preface, editorial additions). We do not provide word counts or page numbers, as those vary by format. Edition facts are limited to what is stated in the source record or evident from the text itself.
Recommendations and related works
Category guides recommend three books with a concrete reason for each recommendation. These are intended to suggest starting points, not to rank or endorse. Related works are mentioned only when they appear in the same category. No external links to commercial sites are used.
Corrections and reader reports
We welcome corrections and suggestions from readers. If a catalogue note contains an error or omission, please contact us via the contact form at afudu.com/contact-us. We will review and update as appropriate. We do not claim infallibility and are committed to accuracy within the limits of our editorial capacity.
Public-domain limitations
All works in the library are in the public domain. We do not assert any right over the original texts. Our editorial content may be used under fair-use principles, but we request attribution if quoted. We cannot guarantee the copyright status of works in other jurisdictions; readers should verify for themselves.
Accessibility and readable presentation
The site uses semantic HTML and avoids images, tables, and inline styles. Text is presented in a clear, standard font with sufficient contrast. We aim to meet basic accessibility guidelines, but we are a small operation and welcome feedback on usability.

This catalogue is independently curated by AFUDU Catalogue, who is solely responsible for its editorial content. No university, library, or commercial entity has contributed to or endorsed these notes. We have no financial interest in the books listed.
What the catalogue does not claim
We do not claim peer review, legal certification, university affiliation, professional librarian credentials, or guaranteed copyright status. We do not claim that every book has been manually read in full. We do not use AI, language models, or prompts for editorial writing. We do not engage in SEO, advertising, or AdSense. The catalogue is a personal project of literary commentary, not a commercial or academic database.
